Networking between Windows XP and Windows 98SE PC--SLOW!

I have three PCs on my home network. All have 100baseT
connections through a 100baseT hub.

Two of the PCs are running Windows XP HOME and the third
is running Windows 98SE. The two PCs that have XP
installed transfer data to and from each other with no
problems...very fast. But if I try to trasnfer data from
or to the Windows 98SE machine it is incredibly SLOW. A
serial cable would be faster. I deinstalled the TCP/IP on
the Win98SE machine and used the XP Network Install floppy
I created to reinstall the networking on the Win98SE
machine as stipulated by MS for computers on an XP
network. I've done this several times but the problem
remains. The Win98SE machine is on the network and can
access the other machine's shared files and folders but
the data transfer is incredibly slow to or from the 98SE
machine...Data transfer between the two XPHOME machines is
OK. Did not find anything about this anwhere on the
knowledge base. Is there a fix? Thanks.

DaveI,
Forgive me... I don't have a solution for your problem. You, however might be able to help me with my problem.

At home, I have three PC's connected to a wireless Linksys network. All can access the Internet (broadband cable) through the wireless hub which is directly connected to my newest Dell which runs XP-Home, and which has all of my master systems and master files on it. My intent, through pcAnywhere that's installed on all three PC's, is to run everything from the new Dell 'server' PC. My problem is that an older Dell, running Win98SE refuses to make any kind of a connection with the other two PC's - the third PC is a stripped-down laptop running XP-Pro that runs applications off the 'server' PC through pcAnywhere just fine, but much slower than the Win98SE box.

I learned about the DOS "ping" command and tried it on all three PC's, pinging the other two. Neither of the two XP PC's could find the Win98SE PC but found each other just fine. The Win98SE PC could not find either of the XP PC's - just a blank stare, PC-wise. Could you help me figure out what I've missed on the Win98SE PC to make it a part of my home network? I just thought I'd ask since your '98 box can carry on a conversation with your XP's across your network.

And, what is the XP Network Install floppy you mentioned - is that what I've missed?
Thanks very much !

Cas,

The XP network floppy disk I made when I installed the
XPHOME Networking on the first computer...It asked if I
wanted to create a network install disk to be use on all
the other PC's on the network (Including Win98
machines)...So it sounded as if this was required...From
reading another webpage it sounds like it wasn't however
but you might give that a try...Also I see there's some
issues with timeouts and wireless networks with XP...Have
a look at the references the other guys pointed out
here...As far as my problem I tried loading TCP/IP from
the Win98SE CD instead of using the XP network floppy but
the problem was the same...Win98SE machine sees the other
two XP machines and can access files/folders but data
transfer is very slow...I also see that there is an issue
regarding 100baseT cards and packet collision...Maybe
this weekend I'll pull the 100baseT card out of the 98SE
machine and install an older 10baseT card I have...Maybe
it's that...OR...Maybe it has something to do with a HST
USR Winmodem I have installed in the 98SE machine...Since
TCP/IP is bound to both the modem and network card maybe
the WinModem is intefering with the NIC...W.A.G. but I'll
look at that as well...
