Hi:

I'm trying to set up a small network with 3 linux machines to be able to
share my internet connection. I'm *totally* new to this subject, so your
patience will be appreciated. My configuration is the following:

Box 1: FC 1 with 2 ethernet cards. this box is intended to act as a gateway.

eth0: connected to a dsl modem (is up an running ... )
eth1: connected to a 3Com OfficeConnect Dualspeed Hub 5

Box 2: Suse 9.0 with ethernet card connected to the hub

Box 3: Suse 9.0 with ethernet card connected to the hub

So any pointers to a step by step tutorial will be appreciated.

Thx in advance,

These days, unless you really, really want to learn all about the gory
details, it is so much easier (and probably most cost effective, if you
value your time at all) to just go out and buy one of those firewall
routers. Most people I know (including a buddy who wrote Ethernet drivers
for BNR, which I believe are used in NorTel switches) have done that.
Easy, practical, and most flexible. If you want to learn... hit the books...

Activate masquerading on Box1
give IP eth1 as gateway in the other Boxes

As the other two responding posts have already pointed out, you can either
set eth0 on FC1 as your internet access point and set up a firewall &
masquerauding then set the other two boxes to use eth1 on FC1 as their
default gateway, maybe even setup DHCP for the two of them on FC1... which
can be a real learning experience for you (and to do it you'll want to
research a lot on the web, prolly starting with www.reallinux.com (or
maybe it was reallylinux.org, sorry, went through this some time ago now)
or you can (if you don't have a need for any real forwarding, etc) just go
buy a cheap broadband router which will handle the DHCP (if you want to
use it) and the NAT addressing for you and you can just plug your internet
into its wan port and each of your three computers into its ports... or,
if you really want to use the first of the two options but don't want to
spend days learning about iptables and IP MASQ, you can download a free
firewall like Firestarter (try www.firestarter.com), or any of the dozens
of others out there, and install it. I mention that one because it's the
one I went with and found it fairly easy to install and configure and use.
In my case, I needed to go that way because, while I already have two of
those previously mentioned broadband routers on my network (now both using
my firewalled linux box as their gateway), I run a MUD, a BBS, a web
server, email, etc from my network. As one might expect, I will now
conclude my two cents with a naturally shameless plug for the above...
Feel welcome to come take a look at these services by visiting
www.tcdbbs.zapto.org in your browser of choice, or log on to The Castle's
Dungeon BBS by telnet to tcdbbs.zapto.org, or even come play with us at
Land of Legends MUD by telnet at tcdbbs.zapto.org on port 4000.
