Networking ADSL Connection

Hello,

Not sure if this is the best newsgroup for this, hopefully someone can help
me though. I have a small network (10 PC's) which I want to connect to an
ADSL line that I have. Currently I have a Netgear switch but want to get an
ADSL router so that I can connect all PCs' to the internet without having to
use a proxy server/ICS.

I have been told that a D-Link DSL-504T is a pretty good router to buy (and
can get one cheaply), but the problem is I can't find anywhere that will
tell me if I am able to connect this to my existing switch and have more
than 4 ports. The router only has 4 ports, and obviously I need more than 4.
Does anyone know if I can connect the router to my existing switch? and is
there anything that I need to know when connecting the 2 together
(setup/configuration of the PC's)

Thanks,
Ian

Yes, just plug a patch lead between the switch and one of the 4 ports.

Not really, although that depends if you're using DHCP or not. If you're not
then the PCs just need their default gateway setting as the IP address of the
router.

Ian

Just for my two 'pennorth, I've just bought myself a 3Com ADSL Wireless 11g
firewall router. It worked straight out of the box, is dead easy to setup,
I got a free PC Card wireless adapter with it and it cost me 80 quid plus
VAT, or thereabouts, from Microwarehouse.

And it will connect to your switch.

Worth it just for the hardware firewall in my view.

The D link ADSL router was flavour of the month then some people
reported firmware problems -- personally I just fit 50 quid mentor
white box adsl routers I have had a couple running for 2 years now
without problem.

The already hub existing can connected to the router --- some may need
a crossover cable some hubs don't need this either because they have
smart sensing or have a special uplink port.
One thing to watch is that the dchp service -- the router will have
it if you have a dhcp hub I would turn off dhcp on one device.

Also remember you need an ADSL router for broadband via BT lines -- a
DSL router isn't the quite same thing.
