I am trying to use the Network Setup Wizard (netsetup.exe
from XP) on a 98 machine in order to connect with a XP
machine, but I get errors saying that the network hardware
could not be found. I do not understand this as I use
both compters to connect to internet thru a hub.

I'm in the same boat -- had a working home network with
two Windows 98SE computers (Dell) connecting through a
Linksys router and wireless card. Replaced one computer
with a new Dell Win XP computer, ran the network setup
wizard, and came down to the remaining Win 98SE computer
with the disk. After seeming to copy the files correctly,
the restart proceeds and I get the message that says "the
wizard cannot find your network hardware." Yet minutes
earlier that same hardware was communicating just fine
over that same network. The Win 98SE computer in question
still gets to the Internet just fine. Any thoughts on
where to go with this? Thanks, Bill

The Wizard sometimes fails to find a working network adapter. That's
probably because the driver program for the network adapter doesn't
give the correct replies to the Wizard's queries.

Here's what the Wizard would do if it ran. You can make the same
settings manually:

1. Set the computer name, computer description, and workgroup name
that you specify.
2. Install these network components if they're not already present:
a. Client for Microsoft Networks
b. TCP/IP
c. File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
3. Share any printers connected to the computer.
4. Create the "Shared Documents" folder if it doesn't exist.
5. Share the "Shared Documents" folder.
6. Configure the local area network connection to obtain an IP
address automatically.
