Networked but no internet now

Problem #1 The 2 PC's are networked through a router - 1
is Win 98 and 1 is Win XP. The Win 98 computer never had
connectivity to the net. During the installation of the
ISP software it attempts to ping various sources and it
can't.

Problem #2 I see both computers on Network Neighborhood
but I can't access the net from Win 98 computer. I then
went to the XP computer and the net was down on that.
After unhooking the router from the cable modem the net
came back up immediately on XP.
