Hi. I have a wireless laptop in corporate network. All network drives,
network printers etc. works fine, but I can't establish connection to
Internet. Pinging works fine, if I try to ping some address outside (like
www.microsoft.com), it will return ip-address just fine. Trace route -command
can't trace the route to same address, though. If I switch laptop's
connection to wired mode, using EXACTLY same settings (same ip-address,
network mask, dns-settings etc.) Internet-connection (and everything else)
works fine. Where should I start finding the solution?

Hi

You should first discuss this issue with the local IT people, there might be
restrictions on the Wireless system that are not imposed on the wire.

Hello again. There are no restrictions concerning wireless system. Could this
be a routing problem? If I ping anything outside our LAN, I get the "Request
timed out" -answer, however the ping -command returns the ip-address of the
target I'm pinging (so DNS should work, right?). We have a Windows 2003
Server which handles DNS and Routing. Again, If I disable the wireless system
on the laptop and use wired connection, everything works fine. What should I
do next?

Where does the tracert command end wirelessly if you do tracert dhl.com?
It's possible that the wireless is not configured correctly at the Windows
2003 server, or it's set to prevent and internet connection wirelessly. Can
anyone reach the internet wirelessly? That's why I believe it was suggested
you contact your IT people. I believe that if you first ping DHL.com with a
wired connection, and then disconnect the wire, the IP address maybe cached
within your machine so you could still see the correct IP address, leading
you to believe you are connected when you aren't. You would need to first
repair the Wi-Fi connection to flush the cache to be sure that your computer
is actually pulling a new IP address.

Hello again and thank's for your answer.

The traceroute command's first (and last) step on it's way to dhl.com is our
2003 Server. After that it's "Request timed out". If wired, the path is:
1. 2003 Server
2. DSL modem
3. Our ISP:s server and so on.... all the way to dhl.com

I forgot to mention that wireless communication outside our LAN was
succeeding from every wireless laptop since the wireless system was built and
this problem we now have has appeared recently (the wireless system is on
testing phase, so fortunately this is not a matter of life and death,
yet...). As our firm is rather small, we don't have IT-department, and the
servers are configured by me. I have not altered the server configuration
(well, not intentionally, anyway). However, after saying that, there was a
problem with MS DTC service, which I fixed by following advices from MS
Knowledge Base. So, if there actually was some kind of restriction on the
server which affects the laptop's wireless communication outside LAN, where
would I start searching?

The XP's network diagnostics suggested that this could be a problem in our
DSL modem. Any comments about that?

A short update to wireless connection, which is currently WORKING. I am
actually writing this message with wirelessly connected laptop. Earlier today
I noticed that our wireless access points (all three of them) had time/date
settings all wrong (year 2004, January something). I updated time/date
settings to current and now connections outside LAN suddenly works.

It makes me wonder, if this could really be the reason. I know for sure,
that nothing else has been done today concerning LAN/NET settings.

I will monitor the situation and post here if problem returns. Bye for now.
