I am working towards two enhancements to my small home network, which I
could carry out together or separately. I would welcome the advice of the
experts in this newsgroup as to the best way forward.
At the moment the network (all wired) consists of:
- e-tech ADSL modem/router (conexant chip) providing DHCP server with 4
10/100 ports
- Epson Aculaser C900N printer (using LPR protocol)
- MRi Print Server with a Epson Stylus Color 440
- 1 PC running Win 98SE
- I do occassionally also connect a laptop, running Win95,
Planned Enhancement 1:
- To add a VPN capability to allow connection to/from friends individual
PCs or small networks via the internet.
My existing router only supports VPN pass-through so I wish to add a router
with VPN endpoint capability. Can I just add this behind my existing
modem/router, or do I need to replace the existing one? If it can be added
then can I use the ports on the existing router as well as the new one?
- To allow IPP to the Aculaser
Planned Enhancement 2:
To add a Wireless capability to support two needs.
(a) normal access point capability (infrastructure not ad hoc), and
(b) bridging so that the printers (Aculaser and Print server) may be
separated off, connected to an existing 10Mz hub, through which a wireless
connection can made to the rest of the network. I am assuming that this
will consist of an Access Point (possibly within the new VPN router used as
part of Enhancement 1) and a Wirless Bridge in AP/Bridge client mode.
I am thinking of the VPN router being one that will support Wireless as well
as Wire (e.g. Vigor 2600We or something cheaper) and the AP/Bridge as a
Linksys WET11 (or WAP11) or someting from D-link. But not sure whether
these will work together. I know that the best advice is to use equipment
from the same manufacturer but I cannot find one that makes all the bits
that I seem to need.
Suggestions, comments, advicce etc would be most welcome.
TIA
