I'm new to the whole monitoring network traffic. I've never done it before
and I'm trying to learn what's involved.

Can anybody recommend any software to help me monitor or internal and
external network traffic and performance.

Also, what are some good resources to read up on this?

Thanks!
Jasper

nmap/zenmap and Wireshark are some popular monitors.

You don't say how technically knowledgeable you are already. So start
with Googling "How does the Internet work". Using one of the above
monitors, can you take a packet apart and define it? Do you know your
own IP address? Do you know your computer's MAC address? Can you
determine your own subnet mask? Can you trace packets from you to
somewhere else? Can you translate an IP address to an IP name? Do you
understand the individual tcp/udp ports on your computer?
