Network speed Coax/Wireless?

I have a small home lan on an ADSL 512/128 connection I use both Linux and
Windows on PC's.

Presently I use Cat 5 cable in my office area and have a small hub which I
use to connect various PC's, although I usually have 3 connected most of
the time. I then have a coax ethernet connection inside the wall which
runs upstairs to another small hub and there is always one PC connected.

Unfortunately, that coax cable cannot be changed, it has been in place for
10 years and works OK, but can't be used to pull through a new cat 5 cable.

I have been looking at getting a wireless access point to enable me to use
my laptop from anywhere inside or outside the house.

Now I don't know a lot about wireless but was interested to know whether the
speed of wireless may be better that that presently available over the coax
cable? By way of example if I download a large file from my ISP's FTP site
I can get around 51KB/s on any PC in my office, however onthe PC at the end
of the coax I can usually only get about 30KB/s.

Any comment appreciated.

That's quite difficult to believe. Your coax has to be of an execeptinally
bad quality to get you *that* bad performance. Typical coax will give you
about 800KB/sec. It should not even closely equal that of your internet
connection. Or in any way impede it

Do you have, just by chance, a windows router in front of your internet
connection? There is no other sane explanation of this horrible performance

No windows router, but I may have not been too clear in what I said.

The speeds I referred to were from the Internet, a speed test from
www.dslreports.com shows 50.5KB/sec or 414kbps on the office machine, on
the PC at the end of the coax it was 50.9 KB/s 0r 470kbps. On a transfer on
the local lan I get speeds up to around 880KB/s

In thie initial query I was referring to differences that seemed to occur
with general downloading, although it may have been just at that time.

My main query relates to whether I would gain any speed benefit by using
wireless access to the lan for the PC on the coax? I need to use wireless
if i want to use my notebook around the house. Although as I had said, I am
not familar with wireless and possible speed!

Thanks

My older type "B" wireless (11 mbps) gets about 600 KB/s open system or
somewhere around 300 KB/s with WEP enabled with less than optimum hardware
(Linksys WAP11 v2.2 & SMC 2632W pc card). That is certainly fast enough
for my 768/128 adsl (80 KB/s), soon to be 1500/256 (155 KB/s).

Type "A" wireless has limited range because the 5 GHz signal is more
absorbed by solid objects. Not sure if type "G" specs have been finalized
yet, which gets faster speed out of same 2.4 GHz that type "B" uses, and
is "supposed" to also be compatible with "B" (mixed results I hear).
