On my home network I have a FreeBSD and a Linux machine, connected via a
LinkSys router. Using DHCP from the router, I can generally ftp between the
2 at about 8MB/s, which is pretty good. However, when I statically define
the IP addresses, my ftp speed goes up to 10MB/s. I have been able to
repeat the results ftp-ing the same 600MB iso image.

Is there any reason why static would be faster than dynamic? I am
scratching my head over this one.

Because the DHCP server gives it the incorrect gateway address ?

It seems like the packets are going through a router instead of just going
straight across the ethernet and only the ethernet.

Or the firewalling on one of the boxes contains a bandwidth limit on DHCP
addresses ?
