Hi
I live in Canada and I would like to know what skills set should I
seek in order to be a computer technician and network specialist
(basically small network, like home and small office network). Which
certificate I should try to get, which website/resources I should read
daily etc.

Any help would be very much appreciate it.

PS: I have engineering background (in control systems)

Personally, I'd suggest starting with something like the CompTIA A+
and Network+ qualifications. These are both fairly vendor neutral (so
they won't tie you to a specific manufacturer's products) and give an
overview of hardware and networking.

Beyond that, you need to look at what you actually want to do -
whetever you want to be a specialist in one area, or be a general
purpose administrator. If you want to specialise in the network side,
then a CCNA might be useful.

Well, that's where I started from, starting from installing machinery,
to writing control packages, to becoming the "guy who knows about
computers" for my last set of employers.

Hopefully it means that you've got a jumpstart on the hardware,
software and some of the concepts you'll need.

But they run and hide now when they hear my electric shaver ...

That, as they say, depends on you.
