Network reporting incorrect IP for PC?

I have recently setup a new client PC on our network, and transferred the
name from the old machine to the new one. Before bringing up the new
machine, I changed the name of the old machine and removed the original
name from the Active Directory 'Computers' list. Then I added the new
machine to the network using the original name.

Now, I am unable to connect to the new PC from another using the machine
name. I've tried connecting to it through Network Neighborhood and through
Remote Desktop Connection, and I've met nothing bet failure.

Here something very interesting: I ran 'ipconfig /all' on the new PC itself
and it gives me an IP address. With this IP address I can connect to the
machine using Remote Desktop Connection. Nevertheless, when I ping the
machine name from a remote PC it gives an altogether different IP address.

What did I do wrong in transferring the machine name? How do I resolve this
issue?

Thanks in advance,

Mervin Williams

The name resolution doesn't happen via the Active directory. Names get
resolved to IPs via DNS, WINS, or NetBT broadcasts. Check the entry on the
DNS and WINS servers.
