Network probs- Belkin router

Any ideas that may help me get my network fully up and running?

I'm using an NTL Broadband connection through the Set Top Box.
This connection goes to a Belkin 4-Port Router (F5D5230-4).
Straight through cables then go my 2 PCs. I have absolutely no
problem getting the internet on both PCs but I'm beggared if
I can get the PCs to share files (and believe me, I've tried all
sorts).
I must assume that my cabling is correct as the internet connection
works OK on both PCs.

Both Pcs are running Win98SE.
PC#1 can see both PCs but when I click on PC#2 (on PC#1)
I get the message
"PC#2 in not available. The computer or sharename could not be found"

PC#2 doesn't see either itself or PC#1.

Computer names are different: Workgroup name is the same.

TCP/IP is installed and AFAIK is configured correctly.

I have tried shedloads of combinations of configurations but I'm
prepared to go through them all again if someone would be good
enough to try to help me with constructive suggestions.

Something odd BTW (at least to me)
The indicator lights on the Router are on when the appropriate PCs are
on but, when PC#1 is off, the light remains on (as long as there is
power to the Router)

Rhine II fast ethernet adaptor in PC#1 (Via the motherboard)
Realtek8139 NIC installed in PC#2

TIA

Roger

Yes that sounds fine.

That would indicate the problem is on PC#2. But at some point it worked
because PC#1 has rememberd PC#2's detils, but they are no longer available
that's why you can't access them now.

PC#1's network card supports "wake on LAN" it stays powered on even when
the PC is switched off. You can disable this feature in the BIOS if you
like.

The problem is PC#2's file and printer share setup. Don't fiddle with the
IP stuff that's fine. Also all your hardware is fine too, otherwise
internet acc3ess would not be possible. The fact that PC#1 can see it's
own shares means the problem lies with PC#2.

I would uninstall the printer and network sharing by removing them in
the network control pannel. Re-boot (as always) Re-install again and again
re-boot. Create a shared drive on PC#2.

Now make a cup of tea, go down the pub for a pint or what ever. It can
take up to an hour before the Network Neighbourhood sorts itself out. It
can be speeded up by nominating one PC as the browsmaster, but it is
pretty slow whatever you do. This is why it remembers previously known
connections even when they are no longer available.

Check again, does it work now?

Hope this helps, Graham

My work pattern prevents me from trying this out until monday evening.
I'll be sure to let you know how it goes. Thanks for looking into this
for me.

Strange...?

What happens now is,
Both PCs off.

Boot PC#1 and PC#1 sees itself fully (all shared drives and folders)
Boot PC#2 and PC#1 sees itself fully and PC#2 but declares that PC#2
is inaccessible.
PC#2 sees nothing.

The internet connection remains fine on both computers.

It would seem that whichever PC is booted first can see a network and
the other sees nowt :-(

Do both PCs have the same IP address?

Both PCs are set to obtain IP address automatically.

And are they actually doing this? What IPs do they pick up?

This is where I show my ignorance...

How do I know/where do I look?
