network problems

I've had a working Gentoo install on my mini-itx for quite some time, and
everything has been quite cool. This morning I went to the computer, and
found that the network interface was dead - this was using a usb ethernet
adapter I've used for some time. I played around, and found that it will
not get an address via DHCP as it has forever. I was able to assign an IP
address using "ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.109. At this point, I could ping
everything on the local net, but could not get out (even by specifying IP
address). Retried with the onboard lan adapter and got the same results.

I have now booted an Elive CD and find that both adapters come up fine
with DHCP, like I would expect. I've also 'badblocked' the installation
partition, and got no errors.

Can anyone give me any ideas or places to look, things to try?

If you can ping local addresses but nothing outside, it could mean your
router/dsl/cable/whatever is dead or needs rebooting.

I found the solution. Somehow the routing table was zapped. did "route add
default gw 192.168.1.1" and it came to life. I would sure like to know
what happened though.

BTW - I have a network as follows - wireless cable modem -> wireless
router -> 4 port switch with three computers + laptop using wireless.
Everything else was still working.

Well, duh.
When DHCP fucks up, you don't *get* a gateway.
Assigning an IP address to an interface gets you exactly that - an IP
address.
You'll *always* have to add the default route yourself.
And your nameservers.
And an appropiate domain suffix.
