Set up a Linux machine with Samba and point to it from the two machines
as their WINS server. Or figure out how to make WINS work on Windows
(good luck).

Can you ping the xp machine from the 98 machine? Try it by name and
number. Report back

Have you disabled any firewalls? You may need to uninstall because
disabling often isn't enough if a personal firewall is misbehaving.

As well as installing file and printer sharing, you have to share out
at least one directory. Have you done this?

Jim.

One way pings like that are nearly always down to a misconfigured or
misbehaving firewall. Check the xp firewall is allowing traffic on
ports 137-139 and look on the 98 for a disused firewall which hasn't
been uninstalled or has not been uninstalled correctly.

share at least one folder on each machine (for testing) try it
no?
disable XP's firewall and try again (disconnect the gateway from the
internet connection so the nasties won't get in while you are trouble
shooting)
