Hi
I have just set up a home network, between 2 desktop pcs, both running on
windows xp home, both machines have service pack 2 installed. The 2 machines
are linked together via crossover cable. I am using an Ethernet USB adaptor
on the host pc (named DELL) - the Ethernet port here on DELL is used for the
cable broadband connection (via an NTL set top box) so the crossover cable
is connected to DELL via this adaptor into a USB port. I am using the latest
version of (free edition) zone alarm firewall.
Initially zone alarm was causing a problem, refusing to let either pc to
recognise the other but after uninstalling zone alarm, downloading the
latest version and doing a clean install, and further playing around with
zone alarm I managed to get the network running ok with both pcs recognising
one another and the secondary pc (named PACKARDBELL) was able to access the
internet ok (through the host machine DELL) using the default browser
mozilla, as well as IE.
However the next day (there were NO programmes installed in between), for
some strange reason, the PACKARDBELL machine was unable to access the
Internet via mozilla, but WAS able to access via IE. I have had this problem
over the last couple of days. I have tried temporarily to disable zone alarm
and sure enough, access thru mozilla on PACKARDBELL is possible, but as soon
as zone alarm is enabled again then no access thru mozilla is possible!
The virus definitions on avg anti virus (free edition) on PACKARDBELL need
updating, but I was also unable to do this with zone alarm running on DELL.
As soon as zone alarm was disabled then sure enough I was able to do an
update!
File sharing and printing has been, and is still OK.
Any advice please?
Thanks in advance
