Hi,

All computers in the office are Windows XPP sp2 with server Windows 2003
Standard which provides DNS,DHCP,WINS service. I tried to ping computer A
(computer name : computera) but the result is time out. Furthermore, I am
using XP search the computer A, it can be found it.

I do not know that this situation is normal or abnormal, please advice

Thanks
Jimmy

hi,
can you ping any other computer? if not then check your lan cable...

try to look into network > properties > TCP ...

make sure that you have netbeau, tcpip, microsoft client...etc.
if these are present, try to remove them, reboot...add these
back...reboot.

actually netbeau is not needed but i found out in winnt (several years
ago) that it solved my problem. can't say it was the cause or not
though.

hi

first of all you need to check if they get an IP adress, do so by going
to start-run-cmd - ipconfig /all

if they get their adress from the dhcp try pinging directly to that
adress in stead of using the computername.

Windows XP SP2 has a build-in firewall, make sure that the firewall is
configured so it accepts incoming ICMP echo packets.
ICMP echo == ping

In the default config all ICMP packets are dropped, this is probably the
reason why you cannot ping that workstation.

XP-sp2 has the Host-based Firewall "on" by default.
Turn it off or set it up properly to allow "ICMP" (Ping) from other members
of the same LAN.
