Hello World,

because of driver problems i decided to upgrade my kernel on my SuSE
Linux 9.1 machine.
I downloaded the 2.6.10 sources from kernel.org, compiled it with the
same settings as the SuSE 9.1 kernel was compiled and finally installed it.

Everything works just fine. But i am not able to get any network connection.
I have 2 network cards, the modules are loaded and are running. The
network cards (eth0,eth1) start perfectly. But i can't get out, every
ping has connection loss like the network cable plug is pulled, but it
isn't. I am perplexed... The boot messages and the syslog don't show any
error.
The old kernel (2.6.4-52) still works and there are no connection
problems at all.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

What mobo and net card does it have?

I recently failed to get 2.4.28 to work on an old box that works OK on
earlier 2.4s.

Do you see the card/any traffic on counters if you ifconfig?

Andy.

mobo: don't know. how can i figure out on a running system?
net card: 3Com 3C905C-TX Fast Etherlink

ifconfig:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
inet addr:XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX Bcast:XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: xxxx::xxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx/xx Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1492 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:131 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:13944 (13.6 Kb)
Interrupt:3 Base address:0x2000

the routing table is also ok.

Strange behaviour!

Thanks,

I guess I should have said chipset rather than mobo. You can use lspci to
see add -v or -vv -vvv to get more detail.

I have an intel 440bx based with rtl8139 and just wanted to see if there
was anything in common.

I get all 0s. I rarely use this PC now so the last one I did is 2.4.20 and
it's an old distro 2.2 based so I think we could have different issues.

I'll try some other versions if I get time and see where it changes.

It's still worth posting your chip details though, someone may know of
issues.

Andy.

Thanks Andy!

i got the problem solved. I have two different net cards installed and
both modules loaded (3c59x and r8169).
Now i unloaded the 3c59x module and it's working with the other net card
(r8169). Since i want to use only one net card in the system, everything
is ok.

Is it possible, that both modules deranged each other?

Thanks and greetz

With 3Com garbage in the system, any strange bug is possible.
