Your printer is probably pulling too much power and as a result the PC is
shutting down part of the USB system. I'd get a small, inexpensive
self-powered USB hub (you can find them at most stores that carry computer
stuff, for example, Wal-Mart has them as low as $20) and hook the modem and
printer up to the USB hub.
