Hi,

A small number of us have recently moved into a new office block, the
offices come with LAN ports built into the walls.

We then have ports pointing to ports i.e.

Port 1026 is next to the switch so a cable from our switch runs into
there, Port 1026 is then mapped to 1031 which is plugged into my
machine so I have connectivity to our server.

We appear to be getting very poor reliability out of this cabling, if
we run a cable direct from our switch to a PC then the speed is as you
would expect but if yo use the built in wiring in the building then the
speed drops right down.

Can anyone suggest a tool I can use to prove this point so we can get
our office re-wired

Cheers

Ian

Any good cable tester will show loss/attenuation/freq of the cable. Have an
installer certify their installation and you'll be covered. Once installed
they can provide you a report on each jack certifying it to meet the
specifications. The testers are typically more expensive than your building
services/IT dept will want to spend, so it's best to have the installers do
it.

Hi,

The problem is that the cable is already installed and we are 99% sure
that it is causing are network issues.

Is there any software out there that would help us prove our point?
What would I be looking for? Packet loss or just a low throughput?

Regards

Ian

No software running on a PC will tell you have bad cabling. If you run a
sniffer (ethereal) it can show packet loss, but you will have no idea where
the problem is. If you suspect its wiring, have it tested, that's the ONLY
way to definitively prove/disprove cabling.
