Network Path No Longer Exists - Help Needed

The symptom is that when copying a large file or a large collection
of smaller files over the network, the copy starts but eventually
fails with "Network path no longer exists".

A search of MSKB turns up KB814112 and 810907, but these describe
the problem as being related to SMB signing, and occuring in XP
prior to SP1. I'm seeing it with regularity on Server 2003 SP1
accessed from XP SP2 clients.

I have captured a network trace showing the failure, and need some
help from someone familiar with the protocol. The trace is in
libpcap format (viewable with Ethereal).

If anyone's interested in taking a look at the trace to help me
determine the cause, it would be greatly appreciated. Please
email me at (E-Mail Removed).

Thanks in advance,

Jim Garrison

assuming you have good connection, you may get a hotfix from MS.

xp sp

The article you link to says that the source computer is XP. Does
this also apply if the source is Server 2003 SP1?

Also, can I easily disable SMB signing on the source? What's the
procedure for doing so?

Thanks.

James, just had a similar problem that wasn't client specific. Trying to
copy a file (or sometimes just right clicking on a shared file) would cause
the server to drop off the network.

I traced the problem to the VIA Gigabit onboard LAN driver. The version of
the driver that shipped with the product works fine, the version of the
driver that comes down with Windows Update doesn't work. If you have this
NIC, or similar NIC, try rolling back the driver.

Frosty.
