Network OK - No File Share

My daughter and I both have Pipex ADSL, we both have XP Home on laptop
computers.

I am behind a Vigor 2600 router with built in VPN server, she is
behind a Linksys router.

She is able to connect via VPN to my network fine, we can ping both
ways, she can see my shared folders and open files within, I can
connect to her using VNC but for some reason if I try to open/explore
her computer I get the message that I do not have permission.

I can see her computer name on 'workshop computers' but I cannot open
it, she has definitely allowed some folder shares as they have the
'hand' under the folder.

Any ideas what may be the problem.

do you have the same userID and password on her machine and yours ?

does she have any firewalls running ? I had the symptoms you describe
with a laptop sat next to my desktop, one way traffic and the same
error. It was a firewall on the desktop stopping the laptop opening
folders though it could see the computer in Workgroup.

If you are talking about the XP log on then no, different username.

I'm thinking this may be the problem but, as mentioned, both behind
different routers and we both run ZoneAlarm although we have both
tried the latter turned off.

I do not have XP's firewall running, I'll have to check my daughter's
machine but think she has not installed SP2 so don't think there is a
Firewall.

I'll dig deeper.

well if XP security was worth anything, which it probably isn't, you
shouldn't be able to log into a machine on which you aren't a valid
user or that doesn't have Guest access enabled. Try setting up an
identical username/password on each, just for test purposes.

I~f you're running SP2 and the Windows Firewall is running, you need to
add File and Printer Sharing to the list of exceptions.

Try uninstalling zonealarm - it is the only way to shut down the
"vector monitoring" or some such bit. This worked for me. I am now
using Kerio with no problems.
