Help.
I have 2 computers I am trying to network.
1. - Running windows ME (called desktop) hardwired to my
3com combined ASDL wireless router/firewall. This issues
both computers with IP addresses (192.168.1.2 for this
one).

2. Laptop (called notebook) running windows XP connected
via a wireless connection to the WLAN (ip= 192.168.1.3).

The 2 computers can access the internet no problem via the
LAN and WLAN respectively. However, they will not
recognise each other.
On the ME computer, when I click 'entire network' in my
network places, I either get 'cannot access network', or
the screen is completely blank if it does enter.

I have tried pinging the computers from the dos prompt and
get:-

ME computer cannot ping XP by ip address or by name
ME computer can ping itself by IP and name

XP computer can ping ME computer by IP, but not by name
XP computer cannot ping itself by IP or by name.

The router/modem has firewall, but turning this off didn't
seem to make any difference.
I fiddled with everything I know, but no luck.
I'm no expert(!!) with networks, I'm sure I'm doing
something basic wrong.
(incidentally, TCP/IP installed on ME computer)
I don't have any passwords set up to interfere with things
