I have 3 PC's on my local area network. One W98 and two
XP's. Everything will work fine for some time period, days
or weeks. Then one day the network is not conecting
properly. Two PC's can find each other, but the third can
only find itself. Or one PC can find all the others but
the other two can only find one of the others. What is
going on? How do I fix this and get some consistancy?
Internet access always works for all three PC's, and all
three computers can PING each other.

If it's the same PC that can't see the network, try replacing it's network
cable.

Since Internet access and pinging work, we know that the network
hardware and the TCP/IP protocol are working.

The shortcuts in XP's "My Network Places" sometimes seem to go bad and
stop working. Right-click and delete a shortcut, then use "Add a
network place" to re-create the shortcut.

Try accessing another computer by typing its name in the Start | Run
box in this format:

\\computer

It might help to disable Browse Master on the W98 PC: Control Panel |
Network | File and Printer Sharing | Properties | Browse Master.

All the PC's go through a router and all connect to the
Internet without any problem. It is not the same PC which
has the problem every time. All the cables seem to be fine.

I was able to access each PC form the other Network PC's
by following the instruction, "Try accessing another
computer by typing its name in the Start | Run box in this
format: \\computer". I typed in \\XXX.XXX.x.xxx (the IP
address)and was able to connect and access each PC.
I could not disable Browse Master because I could not
find it per the instruction.
I next went to Control Panel | Network | File and Print
Sharing | uncliked and reclicked a few things (back to
exactly what it was before) then was forced to reboot.
After the reboot everything worked OK. What did I do? I
really do not know. Any explanation appreciated.

I was able to find and Disable Browse Master. Everything
still works per my first reply, so I am not sure what
effect it really had.

On the PC that is not able to browse, click Start, click Run and hit Enter.
type IPCONFIG /ALL >TEXT.TXT and press Enter
type EXIT and press Enter.
Please copy and paste the contents of TEXT.TXT to your reply.

Thanks!

It's already been answered and the person who asked solved their problem.
