i am not sure how to find information on this ..i have searched
google/google.groups but with no luck so i though i would post here...

brief description

windows box
98SE with analogX (analogx.com) proxy running
connects to internet via modem
connects to linux box via network card

linux box
slackware 9.0
eth0 = 3com pcmcia card

the problem comes in that frequently i lose the connection between the
linux and windows machine and i have to run the following to get the
link back up again
>/etc/rc.d/rc.pcmcia restart
>ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.3

my question is does anyone have an idea why this happens and what i
could do to try to stop it. others have asked if i have dns running on
the windows box and to the best of my knowledge no. and there is no
ICS running on the windows box either (that is why i have the proxy
running...)

thanks for any and all help in advance.
jason

Hi Jason,

Try looking at the power saving modes. Seeing as the ethernet
connection on your linux box is pcmcia, there's a good chance that
it's a laptop. Get into the bios and switch off any power saving
options on the network card.

HTH

There is also a good chance that Microsoft Windows 98 is getting
confused. I had a similar problem with my windows machine locking up
networking every 20 mins or so. The only way I could fix it was

a) Reboot the windows machine
b) Reboot the windows machine

in the end, I just wiped 98 and stuck linux on there. Worked great
then.

Don't suppose there is any way you can test a different NIC in the
windows box? (And hence, drivers). '98 is a bit of a duck tho...

Actually i think i may have a spare nic for the windows desk box, i
dont though for the linux laptop. I will give both of these a try
tonight and see how it works out.

thanks to both of you for the tips
