network interface card

Hi guys, I have a big problem and would like to get some help.
In a room of 12 computers I installed an image of SUSE 8.2. When I
started assigning fixed IP-adresses I realized that my settings are
ignored. Seeing the hardware-informations (under yast2) I found out
that the network driver is disabled (card-name --> driver --> modules:
active: NO --> should be YES).
Unfortunately this happens whith 10 compzters, 2 are working. The
hardware in all of the computers is exactly equal. So how can an image
work on 2 computers and on the others not ?
The mayor question is: How can I enable the driver to assign the
IP-adresses later?
If you know how to do that, please send me a short help.

What network cards do you use, any paraters passed to the driver?
You tried "ifconfig eth0 up" to see if the driver is installed?
