Can I install Linux thru network such as FTP if I have modem only?
I know it is time consuming, but I just want to know if it is feasible.
Thanks~~

Installation is always a distro-specific matter. To answer which distro
might support this, I would say try Debian.

Perhaps feasible for a minimal install, but you would surely be better
off trying one of many other available options. One thing to consider is
to put the hard drive in another machine with a different connection. No
CD drive? Most distros support installing from CD. If you can't download
an ISO image or can't burn a CD, look for one of the many cheap CD
vendors across the world. Again look to Debian: they maintain a very
good list of vendors.

I've never heard of that.

SuSE has an ftp install - shouldn't take more than about two days.

Then hear. It's a normal installation mode on many distros, including
RedHat and SuSE, to name but two.

And no, it is not time-consuming. The net is as fast a medium as I
know. A 1MB/s feed on a T1 is not hard to sustain. All you have to do is
find an unloaded ftp site (at the time of asking).

I have heard of ftp installs. However, the OP was looking for ftp install
over a (dial up?) modem. This would require an installation disk that
could connect with a dial up modem. It would also be a tad slow. ;-)

It would indeed be very slow. Unless by modem, he means "cable modem".

However, I think ppp was in the modules for most install kernels, and
certainly serial.o is (for mice), so he should be able to talk through a
normal serial port modem with ppp just fine.

I don't know if he'll have to sidestep to a root prompt to set up the
connect during the install, or whether it's in the menus. But it's
certainly possible. Convenient? Depends on whether it's an option
in the menus, or on skill level.

I remember when 300B modems were FAST!
