It would indeed be very slow. Unless by modem, he means "cable modem".
However, I think ppp was in the modules for most install kernels, and
certainly serial.o is (for mice), so he should be able to talk through a
normal serial port modem with ppp just fine.
I don't know if he'll have to sidestep to a root prompt to set up the
connect during the install, or whether it's in the menus. But it's
certainly possible. Convenient? Depends on whether it's an option
in the menus, or on skill level.
