Network hangs when files accessed

I'm running 2 PCs (one Windows ME, the other Win 98) on a
LAN, using Linksys network cards and a hub. Each computer
can see the other's files and drives, but as soon as I
attempt to access files on the other computer the
accessing computer hangs and has to be rebooted. The same
happens if I try to set up printer sharing.

Any ideas?

Mark

Do you have your LAN connected to an ISP(Internet Service
Provider) via a modem? It is difficult to picture your LAN
setup and your problem. Setting up a LAN is a gnarly
problem unless it is done correctly. I learned this the
hard way. Please reply with a post I will try to help.

I think I know what the source of your problem is,
although I am not expert enough to give you a sound
technical reason. You can't access the Internet or other
computers in your LAN if you are simply connected via
network cards, a hub and a modem which gives you access to
the Internet. You need to install what is called a Router.
A router is essentially a Modem and a Hub all-in-one. They
are easy to install.... and if your a "el cheapo" like me,
go buy used stuff on Ebay auctions. You can get a good
router for less than half the retail price...and delivered
to your home.
Good luck.....and please post a reply with this Newsgroup.
I would like to see if my suggestion is a good one. I am
still learning also.
