Network Drive - Slow Browsing

Network Setup:

Windows 2003 Server AD w/folder shares setup as network drives on XP Prof.
Clients. A 3com 100mb switch for the 2nd floor, connected to a 3com 100mb
switch for the 1st floor. The server is attached to the 1st floor switch.

When the users browse the network shares there is a delay in opening each
folder, sometimes upto a minute. Opening files is fast, just browsing
directories is slow. If they have browsed the directory recently, then it
is fast. Directories that arn't used that often are slow.

Any ideas?

Ensure that all machines only use the internal DNS server. All AD services
and resource locations are stored in DNS. A domain machine (DC, member
server or client) will contact DNS to "find" a DC to authenticate against.
If browsing is ok, then attempting to open a share is slow, there may be an
authentication issue, which if the machine is configured to use an ISP's
DNS, then it is asking that DNS for a DC in it's domain, which it does not
have an answer for.

If all the machines in the domain are already ONLY using the internal DNS
server in their IP properties, then we can eliminate the above issue.
Therefore, if I may suggest to post an ipconfig /all of the DC and of one of
the clients, along with an Event ID errors that are showing up in the Event
viewer of the client and DC.
