What am I missing???? My two computers are connected via a crossover cable.
They can see each other but they just wont allow access to files, printers,
etc. I have looked and looked but I cant see what I am missing... Any
takers...
using XP on both machines - and have run the wizard with no success.

Do you have duplicate user accounts on both machines and have granted
permission to files for those accounts? Are there any folders and/or
printers that are actually explicitly shared?

I have a similar problem with a small, two-computer network - one
win2k server and one win2k pro machine. Each machine has one 10/100
nic and a connecting crossover cable between them. There is one shared
folder one each system and duplicate user accounts.

When I use the Netbeui protocol, the computers see each other and
transfer files in both directions. However, when I try tcp/ip with
static addresses, only the win2k server machine sees the two
computers. The server has full access to its own shares (in network
neighborhood) but cannot access anything on the win2k pro system. When
I try to access the win2k pro, I get this error message: "//... is
inaccessible. the network path was not found".

The win2k pro system cannot see any networked computers. Any access
attempts cause the same error message on the win2k pro computer.

Can someone help me get my small home network working?

What are the TCP/IP settings of the two machines?

Phillip,

The win2k server has the following settings:
IP - 192.168.1.1
Netmask - 255.255.255.0
Default gateway - 192.168.1.1
DNS server - 192.168.1.1

The win2k pro box has the following:
IP - 192.168.1.2
Netmask - 255.255.255.0
Default gateway - 192.168.1.1
DNS server - 192.168.1.1

Even though there's a DNS server IP address, I don't think I'm running
a DNS server.

If I select the "get IP and DNS server automatically" options, I can't
see any networked computers from either machine.

If the Server is a domain Controller then the DNS settings is alright on the
Pro box, but would be 127.0.0.1 on the Server (although 192.168.1.1 would
still work). If an Internet connection is involved then the ISP's DNS would
be listed in the Forwarder's List with your DNS configuration. The second
NIC (or dialup modem) on the Server would have a Default Gateway pointing to
the outbound (or ISP's) router.

The Server should not have a Default Gateway on the 192.168.1.1 interface.

The Pro box would only have the Default Gateway if the Server was sharing an
Internet connection. Otherwise it would also be blank.

The network's working properly now. Thank you very much, Phillip.

I am using a workgroup type configuration and not a domain controller
but the settings you suggested worked still. I set the IPs to
192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2... then removed the DNS and default
gateway entries and that was all that was needed. [well... probably
all that's needed for now anyway]

Again... thank you very much.

Still a networking newbie... but learning slowly now.
