Network in DOS mode?

I did it once, a long time ago, with Win95. How do
I "Reboot in DOS Mode" and enable IPX networking? I tried
everything I could think of without any luck.

My Network card drivers disk, has a directory called DOS
with the following 3 files: 1207odi.com, 1207odi.ins, and
drivers.dos, all of wich I copied into my windows
directory. When I try to run net start nwlink (for IPX,)
I get a protman.dos failed to load message.

Following the chain of error messages, and extracting the
appropriate files from my Win98 cab files, I end up
putting protman.dos and protman.exe into my windows
directory. I still get error messages, and the drivers
won't load.

I also tried copying the drivers.dos file from the disk as
protman.dos. It still wouldn't work. Any help would be
appreciated. I would prefer e-mail responses if you don't
mind, though.

IPX is installable the regular way within Network neighbourhood
properties just like any other protocol but it is a protocol normally
only used by Netware systems.

Are you getting confused with the old Novell networks and Dos or win3x
workstations which always established connections with the server from
Dos?

I'll try to be a little more precise. I have an older
game that I really like that will only work in DOS mode, a
DOS window won't work. The game is playable over an IPX
network, but I can't get it up and running in DOS mode. I
can get IPX networking in windows (and I installed the
drivers, because I remember doing it before.) The "net
start" commands don't work, and I can't get any
information on getting them to work. As I said, I have a
DOS directory on my NIC drivers diskettes, but they don't
seem to work. When I run the 1207odi command, I get an
error message (don't remember the exact message, something
about needing a low level driver loaded first.)

IPX/SPX usually needs a COM driver loaded first (for an IBM Pro100 series
NIC, it would be E100B.COM, for example) before the ODI drivers will load.

That would probably be the 1207odi.com (for the EN1207D-TX
NIC I have) I tried to run. When I run it I get:

HP EN1207D-TX PCI 10/100 Fast Ethernet MLID v0.50 (980709)
Copyright (C) 1998 HEWLETT PACKARD All Rights Reserved.

1207ODI-DOS-1: The LSL is not loaded.

I have also tried to use the NET commands that come with
Win98. NET START INIT, NET START BASIC, NET START NWLINK,
etc.. However, they say they cannot load the PROTMAN.DOS
file. I unpack that from the Win98 CD and I end up being
told that the PROTMAN.EXE file cannot be found.

The only files found in the DOS directory of the Disks are:
1207ODI.COM
DRIVERS.DOS
1207ODI.INS

I tried copying the DRIVERS.DOS file over as PROTMAN.DOS
without any luck. I tried renaming the 1207ODI.INS file
as PROTMAN.DOS. I had it working once with Win95 a long
time ago, and I seem to remember getting it to work with
Win98 when I upgraded. I just can't remember what I did
at that time to do it.

Sounds like you've got things in the wrong order or you're missing some
bits. I'll have to grab a Novell boot disk from work and find out what
you're missing.
