It would depend on the definition of "fault tolerant". Actually that can
mean anything. It really only means anything in the specfic area or "item"
or "service" that you are trying to make fault tolerant. It is not possible
to make a whole entire network system fault tolerant,...you can only make
certain components in certain areas fault tolerant in certain situations
with only certain types of failures. For example you can use RAID to make
drives "fault tolerant",...but it only works for hardware failures,... and
is worthless for data corruption because the RAID would simply replicate the
corruption to all drives in the array.
Then there is fault tolerance at Layer3 with redundant Router Paths that are
handled by Dymnamic Routing Protocols,....then there is fault tolerance at
Layer2 with multiple switch paths in the switch fabric that is accomplished
by the Spanning Tree Protocol.
Then there is Nic Teaming at Layer1 on a single machine...
Then there Server Clustering (NLB) at Layer7 (or maybe that is above
Layer7?) with multiple Servers
And,...then in recent years you have virtualization and fault tolerance and
failover built into the Virtualization Systems,...depending on how much $$$$
you have invested into them.
So as you can see it just "isn't that simple".
Sorry I do not know of any best practices diagrams. Diagrams can often
mislead you because of the variety in "real life" situations that do not
really "fit" the diagrams.
