Can someone point me in the right direction, I have searched a bit and
get that I am not using the right keywords etc. feeling. I want to find
an iso that I could download and burn, the pop the CD into a typical PC
and without doing anything to the ack "windows" installed on the hard
drive, and do some simple network diagnostics.

********** current problem.

Sons PC has seen one to many lan parties, such that after he ran MSN
spyware on it, post reboot the network status shows it as not getting a
IP address and recieving no packets. Before I use the format and
restore hammer I was hoping I could get a CD that would boot and bypass
any windows mess and let me check that the hardward is still OK.

hardware details FWIW are ECS K7VTA3 motherboard using VIA Rhine II
network chip.

There are many "live" CDs available that will do that. Some are tailored
for system diagnostics and repair.

Forgot to mention. Google on "linux rescue cd" and plenty of choices will
be listed.

I have the Ultimate Boot CD (mentioned on that site.) It is amazing the
stuff it has on it. It is mentioned occasionally on freshmeat.net when it
is revised.
