Network connections fail

I am managing some new servers running Windows 2003. They each have
two network cards, one which is connected to a local LAN and another
which is connected to the Internet. Every so often, the Internet
connection seems to just fail to accept new incomming connections.
This means that all web-related services on the machine become useless.
The problem can be fixed by either restarting the server or by
disabling and re-enabling the connection from "Control Panel" ->
"Network Connections".

This is a serious problem and has become a real headache. I've
attempted to uninstall and reinstall the drivers (as the server tech
support told me to), but it had no affect.

Please, any suggestions or other things I should try? Thanks for your
help -

Is there anything in the event log? What make/model are your NIC's?

No there is nothing in the event log that looks related to the issue.
When I loose a terminal services connection due to the disconnect, that
gets logged. But nothing that points to the cause of the issue, just
the affects.

The NIC's are both "Intel PRO/1000 MT". Another thing worth noting is
that the connection to the local LAN never seems to fail. Although it
gets a lot less traffic and its possible I just don't notice the
failure, whenever the Internet connection goes sour, I can always
connect through the LAN from another server to reset the failed
connection.

Thanks for the help -

Blow off ICS and replace it with a $20 router.

The servers do not use Internet Connection Sharing. I'm using a $120
enterprise router for the LAN and a $180 enterprise switch. Each
server has two NIC cards, one connects to the router, the other to the
switch. The switch is connected to the Internet.

Sorry, I apparently misread what you wrote.

Look at the arp tables after a failure and see whether your switch
has "disappeared."

Connection just went screwy again so I got access to the server through
the backup NIC and checked the arp tables as you suggested. Although
our router doesn't show up in the table, the default gateway for the
connection still does.

It didn't appear that anything had changed in the arp tables between
normal opperation and during one of these freak connection failures.

Thanks for the help though -

I'm having the same problem. It started after I deployed SP1 for Windows
2003. Whitout SP1 it works fine. Another way to fix connectivity for me is
to stop and start again the Windows Firewall Service. Does this apply to you
too?
