Network Components are not retained

I have been trying to set up a connection to MSN on a
Windows 98 computer. I called tech support, they
instructed me to remove network components and re-install
them. When I install CLient for Microsoft Networks and
tcp/ip and reboot, the components are not retained. I am
using a modem for dial-up, the dial-up adapter is not
installed either. I am very frustrated with this problem,
does anyone have a solution?

Thank you in advance for you help!
