network card problem in device manager

Having a strange problem.

Just built a computer, which was working perfectly until
the other day. Now when I turn it on, I'll get a message
that the network card isn't working properly (yellow
exclamation point) and that the drivers need to be
updated. If I update the drivers and do the whole
rebooting thing, it works just fine. Until I turn it off
and on again, then it goes back to the message that it
isn't working. I've tried using two different sets of
drivers, no luck. I can only keep the drivers working for
one session.

Any ideas anyone?

If it helps, it's a Realtek RTL8029 network card, and I'm
using Win98SE.

Thanks.

did you try to re-seat the card?

Boot in Safe Mode and see if there's more than one listing for the
Realtek card in Device Manager. If so, delete all of them.

also I've run into a number of cards with that realtek chipset but needed
exact drivers. (aln201 acer) for example.

it would work "most" of the time with the realtek driver but worked "all" of
the time with the aln201 drivers
