This computer experienced the problem of not booting at
the "verifying DMI Data Pool" on POST. Determined that
there was a loose connection on the motherboard for the
floppy controller. Then discovered that the NIC was not
being recognized by the OS. It showed up in Network
Properties, but not Device Manager, and there was no IRQ
assignment on boot.

Removed the NIC and replaced with another. It worked
flawlessly for the first two boots, then on the third boot
exhibited the same behavior as the original card. The
CMOS appears to be setup properly. I suspect that the
motherboard is going south. Anyone seen this before?

Thanks!

Yeah, sounds like the motherboard is getting ready to pack it in. You can
confirm this by doing a floppy disk boot when it's acting up - if it also
locks on a FDC boot then you can rule out anything Windows as the cause.
