with a network bwteeen 2 computers can both access the net thru one
broadband modem simultaneously? ie 2 ppl surfing etc at the same time.

You can do this. You'll need 2 lan cards and a length of ethernet cable.

Windows handles it all via ICS (internet connection sharing)

Best to get an external modem with built in 4 port router and a
network card in each PC. Just connect each PC to a port and away you
go.

You`ll need a crossover ethernet cable, not a standard straight-wired one

You can use straight-wired ones if you get a router though, and that
would give you the freedom to leave either machine switched off and still
be able to access the internet from the other - and a router is far more
secure against hackers !

Yes you can, but remember they both share the available
bandwidth as well.
