I'm worried an outsider may have accessed my wirless network. Is there a way
to search for any files that have been downloaded to my PC by date? Also, is
there a way to check on accesses to my PC or network from outside?

What makes you think that someone has infiltrated your WLAN?

Please visit my blog and read the 'Best Practices for Securing a SOHO
Wireless Access Point/Router' article accessible from the front page, this
will help you to ensure that your wireless access point/router is secure:

As for checking for files that have been downloaded to your PC, this is
difficult. You could search by date, but anyone who knows what they are
doing will have covered their tracks and most likely installed a rootkit so
that their traces/files are hidden from your OS. Most AP's/wireless
router's allow you to view DHCP leases from your router and often maintain a
log file of IP addresses which have been leased, however you shouldn't
really rely on tracing someone's steps after an incident has occured but
should really focus on preventative measures.

Ryan is correct, you should not rely on trying to catch a hacker by file
dates, and prevention is always better than correction.

That being said, in XP you can use Search to find files by Creation date,
Modification date or Accessed date. Right click on Start and select
Search..., then select When Was It Modified. Select the option Specify
Dates, choose between Modified Date, Created Date and Accessed Date, then
enter the desired dates.

It is also possible to check on accesses to your system through the Event
Viewer Security log, but only if your system was configured to log the
correct Success and Failure events BEFORE the intrusion occurred.

HTH,
