Nice utility,

I have just tried this myself but I cannot get the dB signal level to show
up just a percentage, do I need to connect to an access point or will this
work in ad-hoc mode?

cheers

Right click on the tray icon and you can switch from percentage to dBm. And it
helps set up ad hoc networks and connect to them.

Is there any freeware software like this? Netstumbler, when installed
on my tablet PC with a clean install, works fine. But after I have my
normal programs installed, I end up with the infamous "close
immediately upon launching" problem.

I'd like to find something for both my tablet and my pocket pc, but so
far I turn up a blank.

You could check out Boingo. It's available for both Windows & Pocket PC,
but it may not work with your cards.

Strangely enough, it's available at www.boingo.com

I had seen that a couple months ago - unfortunately I use a dell
truemobile 1400 Mini-PCI on my tablet PC, and it doesn't work with it.

Has anyone narrowed down what it is that makes netstumbler just close
right away after opening? One of these days I'll have to do a rebuild
of my tablet and see what application makes it no longer work, since
it works fine after a clean install, but by the time I've finished
installing over a hundred apps I normally have on it, it does the
quick shutdown thing...

Did you try installing Boingo? There is a note (really a link) at the
bottom of the comatibility list about XP and cards that are not on their
list. They claim it'll work on any card that has the "Wireless" tab on it's
properties page.

Just trying to help.

The WiNc link was earlier in the thread - it's what prompted me to
find out if anyone knew of a freeware application. Granted, this app
is cheap, but I need one so rarely I'd prefer just finding a freeware
app.

Bob, as for boingo, yes, I've tried it, and it won't work on my tablet
PC (dell truemobile 1400 minipci) nor on my pocket pc (Viewsonic V37
with sandisk SD 802.11 card).

Thanks though

J
