netopia 3387w dns proxy doesn't work

i have installed a netopia cayman 3387w wireless router (8.4r2) router for a
customer who uses manually assigned ip addresses on windows xp workstations.
the router works fine except for the dns proxy. if i enter the router
address at each workstation as the dns address, i don't get dns resolution.
if i enter the isp's dns addresses manually on the workstations all is well.
how do i fix this? thanks for any help
