My broadband set up has worked reliably for 6 months or more but over
the last few weeks I've been getting the same problem again and again
and i'm at a bit of a loss.

The laptop will wake up from it's sleep and refuse to connect to the net
(timing out on all sites). Quite often it will refuse to connect to the
netgear modem/router as well. A few reboots and switching the router on
and off usually solves it but not always immediately (i've got it
working today but nothing i did on Friday night or Saturday had any effect).

I'm running Norton AV, no identified viruses.

??

Try the following to see if this will kick the laptop into life:

Open a CMD window (Start/Run/ cmd)
Type:
ipconfig /release
(...wait until the cursor ret runs)
ipconfig /renew

I had a similar issue when the IP address waasn;t releasing properly and the
laptop's IP address kept incrementing (DHCP router) until it reached a point
where it exceeded my set limits on Norton Internet Security for "trusted" IP's.
A quick "reset" of the laptop returned things back to normal.

The fact that your laptop was "sleeping" would suggest it holding its original
IP address and then the router not sure what to do with it. Does your router
provide DHCP? Or do you have a fixed IP on your TCP/IP settings in your lan
connection setup?

I do keep getting IP conflicts - when i reboot the router or
occasionally when i wake up or boot a machine more than one PC is
getting the same IP address. the router is set up for dhcp and all the
pc's set to obtain their IP address automatically.

HOwever, it seems that my broadband connection is failing - i just sat
in front of the router and watched it repeatedly dump the connection and
try to reconnect. However, i'm getting problems even when the router
shows a live net connection.

It's starting to get on my nerves as i've not actually changed anything.
