Netgear makes products that allow ethernet networking over the
domestic mains supply. I got two of these:

http://www.netgear.com/Products/Powe...Specifications

One for the router and the other for a PC. (You must have at least two
units for the system to work).

However, one of the units died after only seven days and I was
wondering if anyone else has had the same experience with the
XE103/XE104 or similar Netgear HomePlug products.

Meanwhile I should add that it looks as if my supplier, DSL Warehouse,

http://www.dsl-warehouse.co.uk/

will take at least a whole week to replace my faulty XE103, which is a
bit slow IMHO. I'll be thinking twice before buying from this lot
again.

Sorry to read you had problems with one of those units. I have to say
I saw mention of Netgear doing them (but I saw the units on Ebay first,
but I now know of a few people using them - OK, 3 friends, not dozens! -
and none were the Netgear units. I think two bought from Solwise on my
recommendation and the third got some different units from his ISP, but
his were 'PowerNet' I think - I will make a mental note next time I'm
looking at their PCs). Might be an idea to grab a spare off Ebay as
you might find it handy, and bargain if they're not in massive demand.

Worth knowing how you find the replacement - one of the first times I
saw Netgear kit was when a client bought a DG814 ADSL router in 2002
and it died within a week. I have it to this day as a hub/switch and
footwarmer in winter months As for DSL Warehouse - some firms may
have expected your dead unit to be sent to them before thinking about
sending anything out, so not sure of whether their service is poor or
average in that respect. I try to have a spare of most anything for
myself / clients to use, from a PCI network card to a 16 port 10/100
switch, and routers etc, but I know most people won't buy spares on
the off-chance. I tend to look for bargains when possible though,
such as the odd router being sold as 'B' grade for a pound (+ P+P).

I think I can beat that... had my brand new two XE104's up and running
perfectly today for about 3 to 4 hours after which one of the units
won't light up any LED lights and appears totally non-functional. Am
waiting for tech support to respond, though am expecting it to be
RMA'd back to them.

I'm very sceptical about these type of devices. Maybe it's because I'm
too firmly routed in old skool networking.

Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright
until you hear them speak.........
