I am looking at buying a Netgear WGR614 wireless router. I was hoping to
get some input from folks on it. There are some highly negative reviews at
CNET but I've come not to trust any of their user reviews because I think
too many people have ulterior motives or an axe to grind. Basically, I just
want to be sure that it works OK when both 11b and 11g devices are
connected. Also, I notice it does not have a parallel port (at least none
that I can see) and I really would like a parallel port for my old printer.
Any feedback or recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I've got one. I've never had a problem with it. It's the second
netgear product that I've bought and it probably won't be the last. It
doesn't have a print server though, so if you want something that has
that, you'll need to look at a different brand/model. Anyway, I've
learned to ignore *some* of the negative comments from the other users
who have had problems with products whenever I do my comparison
shopping. There must be *thousands* who have bought products like
Linksys, DLink, and Netgear, the vast majority of whom are probably
like me who have never had a problem at all. I agree with you that
some people have an axe to grind with Netgear. A search on Google
Groups will show more than one bad post from certain folks in this
newsgroup. Disgruntled customer?

Goodluck on your decision and your purchase.

Can you elaborate? Are you referring to the router or to me? Do you have
another router you would recommend? No offense but your reply is wholly
unhelpful.

Branden,

I have this router and I am pleased with its performance. The 802.11B
performance is around 5mbits per second on a sustained file transfer
from another PC on the wired side of the network. The 802.11G
performance is around 8 to 9 mbits per second from the same location.
The router is upstairs in a loft in my home and the laptop is down
stairs. There is no line of sight between the two devices but no solid
walls either. The signal is bouncing off the ceiling or walls. The
802.11G performance was tested with a tri-spec proxim card supporting
802.11A/B/G which may not be best solution for maximum performance on
the G spec. The proxim card offered a very slight decrease in
performance on the B spec compared to a Cisco 350 card and an Orinoco
gold card. The Proxim card has not had a driver update since the spec
was finalized so I don't know if the current firmware is causing the
performance issues. I would not expect that any 802.11G card will
deliver more then 15 to 20 mbits per second in any case. Other
problems could be in the router for the ethernet ports etc but, I did
check and the hard wired PC was set to 100 mbit.

I have taken my laptop to the rear of my lot and have had a reasonable
signal. The total distance at this point was probably about 80 feet
from the router and all the doors and windows were closed. I have also
detected the signal from my mailbox which is accross the steet and
three houses away.

Thanks for the info. In the absence of anyone suggesting a different box,
I'm thinking this will be the one. Thanks again.

Sorry, I was not referring to you in any way.

The router you refer to is good when it works, unfortunately, the no of
defective pieces seem to be high, the probability of ending up with a dud is
a factor. Get the router if you must, but don't buy it mail order. Its
easier to get a refund or replacement from a shop. I had to pay the shipping
costs to return the router, which I did not appreciate in the least. I also
experienced long wait times on the phone trying to get through to Netgear
support.

Thanks for the info. I am surprised though. I've owned 3 pieces of
Netgear equipment and only had one problem so far. My CF 802.11b card for
my Axim died. I called Netgear and did have to wait a long time just as
you did. In the end though, they replaced the card. I FedEx'd the dud to
them and had a replacement in my hands 3 days later. Could have been
worse. Who did you buy from? Maybe just a crappy vendor (ie falsely
marketting refurbs as new? I've seen it happen). Well, thanks again for
the info. It's helpful.

It didn't work with a Nokia C110 pcmcia b card either. We'll probably have
to wait for a few firmware uprades before everything will work fine.
