Netgear wireless USB problem

I'm trying to use a Netgear wireless USB adapater (MA111)
on my Compaq Presario running 98SE. I have an XP
hardwired to the Netgear MR814 router - works fine. But
when I connect the MA111 to the 98 box, the system
quickly slows down to a crawl, the mouse pointer gets
very erratic, etc. I downloaded the latest drivers from
the Netgear site, no help. The tech support guy wasn't
very useful - recommended exchanging the adapter, which I
did - no difference. Never was able to hook up with the
network either.

Seems like a USB driver problem somewhere, but I don't
know where else to look. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Steve

Older, slower PCs do not run USB devices well since they require processor
horsepower to operate. What are the specifications of your system?

It's not that terribly old - a Compaq Presario, 600MHz
Celeron. I've run other USB devices with it and haven't
really noticed a dramatic performance degradation.
What's odd - the system doesn't return to normal
operation after removing the adapter until I restart it.
It remains erratic and slow.

the MA111 is a mysterious device - there are about 29 reviews of it at
amazon.com - if you read these, you will find that you are not alone.
Most Win98 have problems with the MA111. Also some others with latest
machines and OSs have problems.

About 50% of people have serious problems and another 50% is really fond
of the device and nobody on the net has an explanation why except maybe
Netgear and I fear they won't tell :-).

I put my MA111 in a Win2K machine after it failed in my XP machine and
put the old MA101 in the XP machine. Since then everything seems to work
better

Don't ask me why - but after reading the reviews at amazon you will
stop asking, stop trying and you'll just put the MA111 in another
machine or return it

Such are the mysteries of WLANs :-)

Hope that helps

Wolfgang
