NetGear Wireless Problems

Hello,
I have a NetGear WGR614 wireless router and a NetGear MA521 PC Card.
I'm running windows XP on the laptop and have disabled the XP
Wireless service.

The problem that I'm running into is that I can't surf or ping any
other machines or the router. In the NetGear configuration tool I get
signal strength and link quality in the 90's and see all of the
configuration changes I've made in the router's configuration screens
but still can't seem to see the outside world. One strange thing I've
noticed is that the "data transmitted #" will occasionally increase
but the "data received #" never goes above 0.

I know that the wireless router can see the world because I have a
desktop that's plugged directly into one of the ports on the back of
the router and that's where I'm making this post from.

I've searched around and found a couple other people with this same
problem but no resolutions.

Thanks,
Jay

IT sounds like an ip problem.

Is the netgear running dhcp server and is it correctly serving an ip,
subnet, and gateway to the client ?

What is the IP address of the laptop? Does the NetGear config screen show
DHCP clients (if enabled?) Does your laptop show up in the list? I would
turn WEP off until you get your no-surf issue resolved.

Thanks for the replies.

1. I've updated the firmware on both the router and the pc card.
2. I tried running with and without WEP with no noticable differences.
3. The router is setup to be the dhcp server for the wireless
connections. However it isn't serving an ip to the laptop.

If I do an "ipconfig /all" on the laptop it shows an ip of 0.0.0.0 and
lists the dhcp server as 255.255.255.255.

Under the "Attached Devices" section I do not see the laptop.

I've tried to manually configure the connection by specifying the dns
server and the subnet mask of the router and I can at least ping the
router but I get 4 timeout messages instead of replies.

Thanks,
Jay

What is the IP and subnet of the router, and what did you set the laptop IP
and subnet to?
You should disable DNS on the laptop, the last octet of the IP should be
different then the router or desktop machine. The first three numbers of the
IP should match. And the subnet should match that of the router.

The easiest test would be to bring in another laptop with a wireless card to
see if it has the same problem. I know you have good signal, but it could
still be a radio issue because you aren't getting your DHCP.

Just installed a Netgear MA814 wireless router and MA521 wireless PC
card and experiencing the same problem. I notice when I install the
card and the config. utility starts up, I lose all my network
connection listings. They just disappear.
