I just got my Netgear wge 101 bridge to work. After 2 days it works.
I have it working with my xbox without any problems.
I used my laptop and connected the bridge to it to configure it. Also
I pulled out my Orinoco wireless pcmcia card. You don't really need
the setup disk all you have to do is put the following IP address into
the web browser(192.168.0.201) this is the USA spec. If you don't get
a prompt box for username and password try unplugging the router and
plugging it back in, also hold down the RESET button for 10 seconds.
This is obvious but make sure you have an IP address present for your
TCP/IP on your network card and that it is NOT in DHCP mode. Use the
address of 192.168.0.xxx. Make sure you have the latest firmware
which at this time is version 3.1. Download it from the Netgear site
and save it to your hard drive then install it.
My problem was getting the wireless to work on the bridge. I did get
a signal only in AD-Hoc mode in Infrastructure mode it would not work
for the life of me. I tried everything and all the different
configurations did not help I must have rebooted the bridge about 75
TIMES!!!
OK here is what I did to get it to work. Make sure your SSID on your
router match that of the bridge. Make sure your MAC address is in the
card access list on the router (be careful to put the right digits
in). I am using WEP which is shared key so I entered the 128 bit key
manually (It took me several times removing the key and re-entering it
with all the configurations I tried). Now make sure if your router is
in G mode the bridge is in G mode or B mode the bridge is in B mode.
I have the Netgear Wgt624 wireless router so i had both set in B/G
combo mode. If you have WEP enabled on the router make sure you have
the right pass phrase or key to be entered on the bridge, I suggest
you add the key manually and not use the passphrase. Make sure you
are getting a wireless signal there will be a green line when you go
into the web utility under status. I left my TCP/IP to 192.168.0.201
I didn't use DHCP on the Bridge.
Once you get a signal your half way to wireless freedom. In my case I
got so frustrated I felt good seeing the green line only in Ad Hoc
mode I just left it there and left for about 15 minutes. When I
returned I changed it back to infrastructure mode and voila I was
surfing the net. The wireless light on the bridge remained solid not
blinking. I am not sure what happened but I believe the bridge needs
to form a connection to the router be it Ad Hoc or infrasture in my
case it was Ad Hoc then after a while it configures syncing up the MAC
filtering and WEP. I hope this helps, Just hang in there it will
eventually work leave it for a few days and then try again if you have
to. Its frustrating but it will work as long as you are getting a
signal.
