NetGear wg121

Hello All:
I am trying to use a Netgear wireless interface card (wg121) with my
laptop.
I have a Netgear router (wgt624) connected to a cable modem and my
desktop computer.
This desk top use windows XP and my laptop has win2000.
After installing Netgear wg121 on my laptop, I rebooted and then
connected the usb wg121 card. "add hardware wizard" popped up but
failed to see the driver and attempted to install it as "other usb
device" not as a wireless interface.
I downloaded the newest drivers from Netgear to no avail.
Am I doing something wrong? Does anyone know how to get it to work.
