Netgear router

I have just set up my router for allowing the laptop to access cable
internet. Just a couple of questions....

The router is an 11b MR814 Netgear.

The range is terrible....I drops out in the 2 front rooms which are about 15
metres away. In the config I am not able to select the 'computer to
computer' mode and am stuck in 'infrastructure' mode which I believe is
designed to seek an access point. Does anyone know how to fix this please?

Am I able to access email from the laptop?

Start with a firmware upgrade
http://kbserver.netgear.com/products...atic/MR814.asp There are 2 models
of the 814, the latest is MR814 V2. Download the correct one, write down
your config as the upgrade will erase them. T

You need to set your card / 'receiver' to infrastructure mode too, then you
won't need ICS.
You may have to experiment with positioning your router / laptop, try
putting the router high up if poss.
Once you set up the laptops network gateway to the routers IP e.g.
192.168.1.1 you should be able to access the internet.
