I have a netgear router DG824M, and i'm hoping some kind sole will tell
me how to disable my firewall to allow my children and myself to host games
over the internet.
I have tried myself using the manuals provided but i can't seem to do it.
I'm not very tech minded so i'm hoping that there is something i am missing
i.e log
into the setup and click on something to disable it, so when we are finished
playing
i could just switch it back on.
I am sorry if this post is totally lame but i am getting serious grief from
2 little warcraft
gamers.
Thanks in advance.
keith

Hi Keith

I use the DG824M also, and I know where your comming from

However, its not all that bad

If you know which "Ports" the particular game uses, just add those to a new
"Services" , and when the services has been added, you have to then add it
to the "Firewall rules"..

Say i wanted to play Quake, usally its ports are 26000, so go to "Services"
and add a service name called Quake, then add the port, or ports it would
use. I would put in 26000.. is it UDP or TCP? well if your not too sure you
could put both, but quake uses UDP, so i would select UDP, Apply the changes

Then go to "Firewall rules" and add to the "Outbound" and "In bound", when
you click ADD you come to a new screen showing the Services .. click the
downarrow and a list will be shown, the service that you have just made will
be listed too, left click your new service and choose your action, leave the
LAN users and WAN users to any.

I do get a bit confused as to which i should use, Outbound or INbound, you
could i suppose use inbound and outbound as I do (could get flamed here),
but I guess someone else will put us both right here.

Once you have done that, click apply, and you should be up and gaming

I have a comp on the DMZ, which is wide open to the public (no firewall),
its on 24/4 hosting my web pages, and upto now all ok with that! (he says!)

Have you downloaded the latest firmware from netgear.com? (and read the
instructions!)
that can utilise the UPnP.

Have fun
Alan

Thanks for the help.
I will get the firmware and give it a read.
I would like if there was an easier way because i'm always worried that if i
get
in to things i'm not sure about it'll end up messy(bit like marriage eh,
LOL)
any way i going to give it a try and hopefully i'll be up and running.

Once again thanks for the fast responce.

Sorry it's me again.
Just had a thought, well another question actually.
I have the router up stairs hooked up to my P.C and i have a laptop
downstairs
hooked up with the netgear ma101.
Every now and then the laptop just losses the connection to the router I.E
network connection unavailable,
but if i unplug the ma101 and then plug it back in it works again.
Just wondered if u have had the same probs.
Anyway hanks for the help i'm off to try ure advice.

I would try to add the services before trying to download the updated
firmware...

just out of interest, which games would you be playing?

Regards
Alan

I used to be a quake fan but i find MOH to be a bit slower just right
now i'm heading for my forties.
Halflife looks sh-t hot just going by the demos i've seen, guess it'll be a
fair strain
on the p.c.
